Acupuncture and Chronic Sinusitis with Headaches and Sleep Apnea

Chronic sinusitis can affect much more than breathing. For many people, it can contribute to frequent headaches, poor sleep, fatigue, and a reduced quality of life. While surgery may be recommended for structural issues such as a deviated septum, it does not always resolve the underlying symptoms or provide lasting relief.

In our clinic, we have found that acupuncture may be an effective treatment option for patients experiencing chronic sinus-related symptoms.

Case Study

A 21-year-old male came to our clinic with a history of chronic sinusitis lasting more than 10 years. Over the years, he had consulted multiple specialists but experienced little improvement.

More recently, he developed severe headaches and was evaluated for a deviated septum. His doctors recommended corrective surgery but explained that there was only an estimated 60–70% chance that the procedure would improve his sinus symptoms.

As his symptoms worsened, they began to significantly affect his sleep. He underwent two sleep studies, which showed that his airway was significantly narrowed. As a result, he was waking multiple times throughout the night, leading to persistent fatigue and increasingly severe headaches.

After his first acupuncture treatment, the patient reported that, for the first time in many years, he was able to breathe freely through his nose.

After just four acupuncture treatments over a two-week period, he experienced significant improvement. His headaches completely resolved, and for the first time in years, he was able to sleep through the night without repeatedly waking.

Today, he remains symptom-free with the continued use of an herbal nasal spray to help maintain an open airway and minimize inflammation.

Conclusion

For some patients with chronic sinus symptoms, acupuncture may offer a conservative, non-surgical approach to help reduce symptoms, improve nasal breathing, relieve headaches, and support better sleep.

This case highlights the potential benefits of acupuncture for patients with long-standing sinus-related symptoms. In this patient’s case, significant improvement occurred after only a few treatments and was maintained with minimal ongoing care.
