Digestive issues and the summer

This summer with extreme weather, we experience more dampness. Be sure to take extra care of the digestive system, and watch out for any mold in the environment. Using a dehumidifier or turning on the air conditioner to reduce humidity in your room will help maintain a healthier environment.

What this brings is a breeding ground for mold and bacteria, which may lead to a higher chance of common GI issues such as diarrhea. Leafy vegetables are usually a very healthy and refreshing food in the summer, so make sure to wash well and pat dry. Add some vinegar and salt to further clean and dry the veggies before putting any type of oil in.

On a separate account, there is a shellfishing ban for a couple weeks in Massachusetts because of the toxic red tide. However, most seafood bought in the supermarket should be safe to consume. Sea food can frequently cause issues with the digestive system, even when cooked, so have them in moderation. When eating seafood raw, make sure to go to a reputable restaurant, and have a lot of lemon juice or vinegar, wasabi, ginger, perilla leaf, etc. to eat with. All of the above can reduce the toxins in seafood.
